AI: Friend or Foe?

AI is not writing this...

In fact, I didn’t even consult it. But boy is it pervasive.

I had problems with some earbuds and contacted the company, a chatbot replied and helped me diagnose the problem and then even sent me replacements when we determined that mine were defective. Google searches sometimes begin with AI responses now. Siri, Alexa, Gemini, the list goes on and will continue to do so.

Want to know something terrifying? I was at a conference recently where they showed that the #1 site that AI uses for searches is Reddit. Reddit, for goodness sake. In other words, if you don’t check Reddit for mentions of your company, you’d better stop reading this and go check it right now.

And yet, there are a lot of good things that AI can do. It’s helping us draft documents (not this one), layout warehouses, research government regulations, and so on.

Is this all okay? I think we all agree on the answer, yes? No? Alright, actually we’re simply not sure.

This I know, that so far, even with AI as it is today, the construction industry is still a relationship business. And I hope it stays that way.

Oh sure, if a computer can knock out some time for us, make things more accurate, handle some details, that’s amazing. But at the end of the day, when you need expertise, when you have a problem, and need someone to talk to, we will be here.

How are you using AI in your business? And what are you doing to maintain relationships with your customers?
