Conference Season

1 min read

It’s fall, and for those of us in the building materials industry, that means conference season. I’m not sure why fall is the time for that. I’ve always thought winter or early spring would be better, right before building season gets into full swing.

In any case, I’m writing this in the Charlotte Airport as I am on my way to a Roundtable we take part in. Are you like me? Do you wonder if you should go? I’ve been to a lot of these things over the years, am I going to learn anything new? Some of these companies are smaller than us, am I going to get anything out of it? Is it company money well spent? Maybe I should just sit this one out.

On the other hand, our 5th Core Value resonates in the back of my mind, ‘Challenge Yourself to Grow.’ And, I’ve always felt like I could learn something from anyone. That’s proven true.

It was at one of these not long ago that I saw a better and faster way to load trim for millwork deliveries. At another conference, I learned that the first rule of growing revenue is to keep your current customers. Not to mention the relationships built with great folks from our industry over the years. So many things I may not know if I stayed in my comfort zone.

Okay, perhaps I don’t know it all. I guess I’ll go ahead and get on the next flight and head to New Bern, North Carolina. Never been there before anyway. Where are your most valuable learning opportunities? And from whom do you learn them?
