On Time + In Full in Everything We Do
We’re passionate about OTIF (On Time and In Full) around here.
What is OTIF? In supply-chains, “On Time and In Full” is the performance metric that evaluates how well shipments meet the specified quantity and delivery schedule outlined in orders.
This is Wilson Lumber’s ideal mechanism to align our objectives with customers.
Now, we are not perfect - no one is – but, in industry studies we have seen, our numbers are pretty good.
That’s why it’s a bit odd – but we’ve only recently realized that if OTIF is such an important metric for our customers and for us with our suppliers, then of course it should also be important to us for each other.
The OTIF you see as customers is whether materials get to the job site by the time they are promised. And of course, you know that purchasing must get orders on time and in full to our suppliers, who in turn must get the materials on time and in full to us.
But it is way more complicated than that.
For example, for even the simplest truss order, just a few of the things that have to be On Time and In Full are:
- wood from the supplier
- the puller getting the wood to the saw
- the saw having the cut wood staged
- the forklift driver having the cut wood at the right table just before they need it
- the table working with the table beside them that uses the same finish roller to send the completed trusses to the stacker
Well, it goes on and on. And I am only talking about wood, which is one part of one product.
What about OTIF for truss plates, door hinges, paperwork to payables, and IT related tickets and upgrades? The list never ends.
We are all customers to each other, and we all have customers who depend on us to get things done.
