Some of the best advice I have ever received, was during a training on how to talk to yourself.
We all do it, most of us do it poorly. Be honest, when you make a mistake or don’t accomplish something that you wanted to, how do you speak to yourself?
If you’re like me, it tends to be very negative; ‘I can’t believe I…’, ‘you moron, you shouldn’t have…’
The advice was this. When you make a mistake, instead of the negative self-talk, imagine that you are your best friend.
What would your best friend say to you? I’ll bet it’s different than the negative self-talk that I tend to think of.
So, assuming that your best friend is correct, tell yourself that instead. And frankly, tell yourself that even if you don’t mean it. With practice you’ll get better at it.
I’m not perfect by any means but, this year I’ve made an effort to do this. I can tell you that my best friend voice is way smarter and more productive than my negative self-voice.
Think about this, no one talks to you more than… you. So, if what you are hearing is mostly negative, well, you’ll be negative. Encourage yourself instead. I’ll bet that you’ll grow in confidence and maybe more importantly, you’ll learn to be grateful for who God made you to be.
Let’s let 2026 be the year we learn to talk to ourselves in a way that builds us up.
